National Broadband Network Co. CEO Mike Quigley, today announced Prysmian Telecom Cables &
Systems Australia Pty Ltd as a major supplier of fibre optic cables to the Australian National
Broadband Network (NBN).
Prysmian has been awarded a contract to supply fibre optic cables worth up to AUD300 million
over five years.
The five year contract ensures job certainty for approximately 125 existing staff within
Prysmian’s telecom business located in Sydney, Australia, with up to 50 additional jobs to be
created over five years.
Prysmian will directly invest up to AUD13 million in additional plant and equipment to
manufacture the specialised ribbon fibre optic cables, which will allow the specialty cables to be
manufactured in Australia for the first time.
“This contract not only ensures the future stability and growth of Prysmian, but also that of
our suppliers and distributors who are located around the country,” said Prysmian CEO Llyr Roberts.
“We expect there will be flow on employment effects, with extra jobs being created in
transport and logistics, training and administration.”
Prysmian will be responsible for the supply of cable that will be laid underground, mainly in
existing ducts that cover 70-80 per cent of suburban Australia.
